What is amazing about today?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 11, 2008:
Today is amazing because I challenged popular opinion and won.
I was in my creative writing class and we were critiquing a short story. The story was about a drug addict who was previously a good girl but got addicted to meth and a month later her entire life was destroyed. I do not doubt this can happen, but the story was unrealistic because it was poorly written and read like propaganda.
I said "All the drug users and dealers I know do not speak or act this way. You should research drug use and then rewrite this."
It is not uncommon to know people who use drugs. But all the girls in class started snickering and giggling at me. "Why do you know drug dealers?" some girl said sarcastically
I replied, "No one lives in a vacuum. The real world is full of people who are dependent on drugs and I happen to know a few of them." The class fell silent.
I wanted to cheer! There are not many times I leave a class speechless, and I made my point.
